Jakob Neilsen can be annoying at times...but Vincent Flanders lives and breathes annoying.
Look at him...this guy needs a SERIOUS BEATING, mostly about the face and neck, but ultimately, everywhere. He has a website called "Web Pages That Suck". You can pretty much get the picture of what he does by the name...he reviews bad websites and tells you what they did wrong so you don't make the same "mistakes" they did. He seems to be hung up on usability issues and design heuristics (links are blue w/underline, all pages look the same with logo in top left corner, navigation menu to the left or at the top...).
But should a website that criticizes other website look as crappy as his? Let's pick apart HIS website.
On the home page:
- For someone who doesn't seem too fond of Netscape, he sure likes their horrible color scheme (teal and purple)...yummy.
- No simple menu structure for the main sections of the site. The only thing that remotely resembles a nav. menu is his "Other Links", found at the bottom right side...so much for heuristics.
- Great use of images. Cheesy, for one. All different sizes...and, in the first column...what happened to the margin on that second section?
Once you get into the site:
- Love the change in design...that's one thing that makes a website NOT suck...yeah.
Here's an article with a discussion with Jakob and Vincent...It's called A Discussion Between Jakob Nielsen and Vincent Flanders, but it should've been called Jakob Neilsen Makes Vincent Flanders Look Like an Idiot.
